LendingClub

Clubhouse redesign + design team leadership

LendingClub, now Happen Bank, is a leading US digital marketplace bank. Besides lending to consumers, it sells those loans to banks, credit unions and asset managers through its own investor platforms. Clubhouse was one of them: the portal where institutional investors manage their portfolios and buy loans. I came in to lead its redesign, and later also took on the leadership of the Globant designers working inside the client's design system team.

The Decisions Behind

I gave the Clubhouse redesign the process, research and structure it was missing, and led the Globant designers inside the client's Design System team.

The challenge

Clubhouse was already producing wireframes, but it had started without objectives, priorities or the artefacts that give that work a direction. Later I was also asked to answer for the quality of two of our designers embedded in the client's own design system team, inside a process that was not ours.

What I did

  • Defined the process and priorities on Clubhouse, and produced what was missing: research with interviews, user flows and information architecture.
  • Made the front run: a plan, a schedule and an organised Figma workspace.
  • On the design system front I did not design: I reviewed quality and coached the two designers.

How it landed

Clubhouse ended with a defined process, the research done, the flows and architecture resolved, and the artefacts it lacked at the start. The wireframes made before the research were kept and improved with what came out of the interviews.

HOW RESPONSIBILITY WAS SPLIT Two fronts in the same account, answering in two different ways

FRONT 1 · CLUBHOUSE PROJECT

Client UX Manager

I answer for the whole front

FRONT 2 · DESIGN SYSTEM

Client design system team

I answer for the standard of what we ship

Andrés · Direction & Leading

TWO FRONTS · TWO KINDS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Clubhouse team

Project lead · redefine process · schedule and tasks planning
Initial UX research · user flows · user personas · information architecture

I DEFINE WHAT AND HOW

Team embedded in the design system

Two designers working inside the client’s own process

I REVIEW AND ENSURE DELIVERY QUALITY

The solid line and the dashed line are different responsibilities. On one front I answered for the result; on the other, only for the standard of what my team delivered inside a process that was not ours. Holding both at once is the case.

What I put in place on Clubhouse

From research to wireframes

Interviews and insights, user flows and a new information architecture. The wireframes already made were kept and improved with what came out of the research.
